Come and lap up the sunshine and immerse yourself in the local agricultural land in Dolores, a small yet charming village in the province of Alicante.

Located in La Vega Baja in the province of Alicante, Dolores is an excellent place to walk or pedal among the agricultural land and irrigation channels, as it’s just steps from El Fondo Natural Park. It’s also a great choice if you’re keen to soak up some art. Start preparing your visit to a destination that has plenty for you to see and do.

What to see in Dolores

The decision to found Dolores was taken in 1715 and in that same year construction work started on the houses and roads. The village’s history is connected to that of Cardenal Belluga, a churchman that spurred the creation of different settlements in the area.

Land was drained and roads, irrigation trenches and canals were built, encircling Dolores with impressive agricultural land. Beyond this, a picturesque place of worship was constructed. Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Parish Church, whose structure straddles the Late Baroque and Neoclassical styles, was erected between 1743 and 1745.

Make sure you put the church on your to-visit list to see the beautiful sculpture depicting the village’s patron saint, Virgen de los Dolores, carved by Salzillo. You’re going to love the drama and the detail that the great sculptor skillfully captured.

Once you’ve wandered around the centre of Dolores and unwound in the sunny streets, we’d recommend venturing a little further afield. A great option is El Fondo Natural Park where you can do a spot of birding and see all sorts of species. The varied landscape – comprising the mouth of the river, salt flats and palm groves – has attracted a great wealth of biodiversity.

Last but not least, we’d suggest taking a leisurely wander or bike ride around the lovely agricultural land embracing Dolores. Feel the tranquillity emanating from the scenery and sink deeper and deeper into a state of relaxation. So how about it? Why don’t you see if this sun-kissed part of the province of Alicante will steal your heart?
