Go on a foodie mini-break and soak up the local art and culture while enjoying the coastal attractions. Make your way to Benicarló and be amazed by what it has to offer.

Situated in El Baix Maestrat in Castellón, Benicarló is a place for every type of traveller to get stuck into. Foodies, museum enthusiasts and seaside lovers will all feel right at home here. Want to know why? Come with us on a virtual tour of Benicarló and find out.

What to do in Benicarló

Let’s begin our adventure in Benicarló with a wander around the town centre to soak up some of the local culture. We’ll pop our heads into Benicarló City Museum, known as MUCBE. This museum is housed in the Antiguo Convento de San Francisco, a beautiful old convent which displays archeological artefacts from the nearby Iberian settlement

For a dip into the local architecture, pop into Casa del Marqués de Benicarló, a Baroque mansion that is home to beautiful ceramics depicting scenes of everyday life covering the walls. Bosch House is another building to look out for as its pretty Art Nouveau facade serves as a great muse for a photoshoot. Lastly, take a wander down Mayor street and Sant Joan street, or admire the 18th-century San Bartolomé Apóstol Parish Church.

Now let’s venture out of the town centre and into the outskirts of Benicarló. First stop on the tour is 17th-century San Gregorio Chapel and its idyllic surroundings that are well worth exploring. Of course, you can’t miss having a look at the historic Iberian village Puig de la Nao and taking a dive into its fascinating humble beginnings on a guided tour of the place. You’ll find information and tickets for the guided tours at MUCBE.

Benicarló’s beaches and marinas are another great reason to visit the area. Spend the day at Mar Xica beach or El Fondalet beach surrounded by stunning nature. Or tuck into the local cuisine at one of the many eateries dotted along the urban beaches El Morrongo, La Caracola and El Gurugú to name just three. Benicarló is also a great place to dip your toes in the waters of aquatic sports with heaps of activities to choose from.

We end our trip in Benicarló with a final tasty morsel: the artichoke. This vegetable proudly holds Protected Designation of Origin here in Benicarló and has its very own festival dedicated to it at the beginning of every year. The festival comprises gastronomic events and tailored dishes with the artichoke taking centre stage. Fancy giving it all a try?
