Recognised as one of UNESCO’s Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, Misterio de Elche, Mystery de Elche, is a sacred Medieval drama, lending its name to this festival that is celebrated on the 14 and 15 August at Santa María Basilica. The play reenacts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is performed over two days, with the first act called the Vespra, the Vigil, and the second the Festa, the Feast. The Vigil features the descent of the Mangrana, an aerial device which carries an angel from the dome of the church. The Virgin Mary then ascends to heaven and the ethereal sound of choral singing envelopes the audience and fills the space with a sense of sacred peace.
