Trying new dishes is a great way to travel, understand the secrets of a destination and delve into tradition. Discover the province of Castellón dish by dish this winter and dig into warming bowls of food.

Indulging in the gastronomy of the province of Castellón will take you on a journey through the local scenery via your tastebuds. We want you to experience the joy of sampling traditional Castellón cuisine, particularly in the winter, when eating is not just a joy but a form of comfort. Keep reading.

What to eat in Castellón: comfort in a plate

The province of Castellón’s gastronomy is incredibly well-known. Perhaps you’ve already tried some traditional dishes without knowing it? There is an abundance of dishes that are great for winter in the province, including sopa morellana, a type of stew with small dumplings, known as bunyolets. The dumplings soak up the sauce and are absolutely delicious.

Olla de la Plana is another great winter dish. Also a stew, the recipe combines pulses and veggies to give you plenty of energy. The gastronomy in Castellón puts produce grown in the local agricultural land to good use.

Lamb stews are another common dish in the province of Castellón’s cookbook, particularly in counties like El Alto Palancia. You can also find plenty of fried foods, including different types of meats and artisanal sausages. Alcorina potatoes and olla alcorina are dishes typical of L’Alcora and then there’s tombet de Les Useres. This meat stew is cooked over a low heat and can be found in L'Alcalatén. It’s a hearty, warming dish.

If you’re keen to savour some fish during your winter getaway to the province of Castellón, we recommend trying suquet de peix, a fish stew that is particularly popular in El Baix Maestrat. Arroz empedrat, also known as arroz empedrado from Vila-real, made from cod and pulses, is another delicious option.

The gastronomy in Castellón features countless typical recipes that will warm you up. The best thing you can do is plan all sorts of getaways to try them all.

Gastronomy in Castellón: local products and produce

It’s easy to eat well in Castellón because the local products - grown in the land and caught in the sea - are high quality. You can get your hands on these in places like Castelló de la Plana market. Cooking with Sierra de Espadán olive oil will give your cooking an incredible flavour and what can we say about the delicious black truffle!

We’d recommend coming to see how L'Alt Maestrat celebrates the start of the truffle season, which is early in the year. The county puts on plenty of activities and there are countless dishes that you can enjoy flavoured with this precious fungi.

The wines in the province of Castellón are high quality Geographical Indication vintages, perfect for pairing with your food. To conclude your meal, you can sip on carmelitano liqueur and nibble some Catí cheeses and flaons from Morella. So how about it? Do you fancy planning a tasty winter getaway?
