Located in the province of Alicante, Aigües is a small village with a traditional feel where you can enjoy tasty local dishes and plenty of hiking routes. The more time you spend in the destination, the more you will find yourself won over by its many charms.
What to see in Aigües
A good place to start your exploration of Aigües is at the old tower. Constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries, its original purpose was for defence, but now it blends seamlessly with the urban landscape. Continue by wandering along the tranquil streets of the village and soak up the sense of peace and calm that emanates from every corner.
Your next stop is just outside the village. The Preventorio, also known as Balneario, was once a great spa. Built in the 19th century, the resort used the medicinal and thermal waters available in the area to provide a recreational centre. It is now abandoned and its somewhat mysterious appearance has inspired many local tales and stories.
If you enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, make your way to La Pinada. Just a stone’s throw from Aigües, this natural area is an ideal place to take a walk, gaze at vistas from countless viewing points and marvel at the sheer rockfaces of Sierra del Cabeço d’Or.
Keen walkers will be pleased to know there are plenty of beautiful trails in La Pinada as well as in and around Victoria de Rojas recreational area. You can also walk to Busot or follow the Bacorera trail.
Last but by no means least, Aigües is an excellent foodie destination. The locals take gastronomy seriously and are experts in making stews like olleta and olleta borda, rice dishes and gazpacho. The area is also famed for preparing vegetables in brine as well as all sorts of cocas, sausages and minxos, a sort of flatbread that are usually served with vegetables. Is your mouth watering yet?
