Part of its Festa Major, Bous a la Mar is a traditional bull event that takes place next to the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Dénia’s Festa Major is celebrated in honour of Santísima Sangre. One of the highlights of the festival is Bous a la Mar, an event that has been listed an Event of National Tourist Interest. In preparation for the bull event, a semi-circular bullring is set up in Dénia port next to the fish market.

Festa Major starts on the second Wednesday after San Pedro, lasting a little over a week. One of the most popular parts of the event programme is the bull event, which has a unique feature.

Sitting on the coast, the sea becomes part of the bullring itself, enabling both runners and bulls to jump into the waters to escape.

Bous a la Mar is held twice a day. But it’s not the only attraction of the festival. On the eve of the Day of Santísima Sangre, there is a correfoc which fills the streets of Dénia with fire, while Procesión de la Santísima Sangre brings a sense of solemnity to the historic centre. The programme also includes sports competitions, foodie contests, children’s events and much, much more. Come to Dénia to experience all these unique events for yourself.
