Vía Verde de Benicasim - Oropesa del Mar: a great family day out

One of the best ways to do all the above is to walk or cycle the many trails in the region. Arguably the most popular in the province of Castellón is Vía Verde del Mar, a trail linking Benicasim and Oropesa del Mar that runs along the former railway line that used to connect the seaside towns. 

For some six kilometres, the vía verde - or greenway - showcases the beauty of the Sierra de Oropesa del Mar mountains as they descend to the sparkling Mediterranean coast. The trailhead in Benicasim is at the site of the former railway station that stopped close to the villas. 

You can also start at the other end of the route, in Oropesa del Mar, which begins halfway along the seaside promenade of La Concha beach. From the very start of the trail, you will enjoy incredible panoramic views of the Iberian settlement of Orpesa la Vella, El Retor cove and the marina, before passing through a tunnel that will lead you to La Dona gorge. 

As you make your way along the vía verde, you will be enveloped in a landscape that is full of cultural and historic sites. Leaving you with no doubt as to why it is considered one of the most extraordinary greenways in the Region of Valencia. 

The metal bridge, Colomera, Cordà and Sant Vicent watchtowers, beautiful coves and beaches, rugged cliffs, the Bellver plains and La Dona gorge are just some of the wonders you will discover along the trail.
