The José Segrelles House-Museum is located in the plaza of the same name in Albaida, the artist’s place of birth. Segrelles built what would later become the house-museum when he returned to Albaida after periods in Barcelona and New York. It was here where he would spend the final decades of his life, until his death in 1969.
Today, the José Segrelles House-Museum is a must-visit if you are wondering what to see in Albaida. The building houses the artist’s largest anthological collection comprising many originals that will take you on a journey through his body of work. You will see everything from his early family portraits to his posthumous oil painting, 'El Pentecostés', the culmination of his work on the topic of mysticism.
And that’s not all. You will also see his illustrations for Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’, Blasco Ibáñez’s novels and the stories of ‘One Thousand and One Nights’. His work as an illustrator is extensively covered in the museum. You will also see Segrelles' imaginations about the human anatomy and his interest in space, which occupied him later on in life.
José Segrelles was a painter, poster maker and illustrator who was ahead of his time. His personal style, inspired by Orientalism, realism and science fiction, continues to fascinate people interested in art in the present day. Come and visit his namesake museum and immerse yourself in his unique world. You're going to love it.
