What to see in La Font de la Figuera
Starting in the centre of the village, we’d recommend taking a stroll around to see the religious ceramic altarpieces as well as La Natividad de Nuestra Señora Parish Church, a place of worship which is home to a great surprise: the main altarpiece by Joan de Joanes. This work of art comprises 24 panels and a beautiful sculpture, and is a lovely example of Valencian Renaissance art that you won’t want to miss.
Next, you could take a lovely walk along the Stations of the Cross up to Santa Bàrbara Chapel, a 16th century temple sitting atop a hill. Another place of worship for your to-visit list is San Sebastián Chapel, dating to the 15th century and located in the centre of the village.
Lined with vines, the dry farming landscape has a charm of its own and is home to archaeological sites, namely Cova de la Balconada and Cova Santa, where ancient civilisations once settled. Make sure you don’t miss the most spectacular viewing point in the municipality, El Capurutxo, the highest peak in the county that affords breathtaking views. On your way up the beautiful mountain, you might just see some of the many old lime kilns that define the area.
And La Font de la Figuera has another important slice of heritage that is well worth exploring: the old mills whose remains can still be seen next to the gorge. You can take a look at 18th century Capdamunt mill, 18th century Capdavall mill and Mig mill, dating from the same period and that was in use until 1929.
You will also want to spend some time visiting CM Etnològica i Històrica de la Font de la Figuera, the village’s ethnological and historical collection where you will find plenty of information about the winemaking tradition in this part of La Costera. Come and see it all for yourself.
