What to see in Montserrat
Let’s kick off our tour in Montserrat’s traditional historic centre which dates back to the 11th century during the Islamic period. Meander along the narrow streets looking up at the pretty houses and travel back in time. Crafted between the 18th and 19th centuries, see if you can spot the religious ceramic tiles that decorate some of the buildings.
La Asunción de Nuestra Señora Parish Church is one of Montserrat's most iconic buildings. Constructed in the 17th century, its interior features a blend of Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles. Once you’ve admired this religious temple, visit San José Chapel and Country House, which dates back to the 19th century.
We’ll continue our sightseeing tour of Montserrat by venturing out of the historic centre and into the verdant countryside. Let’s dive deeper into the local historic heritage with some outdoor activities.
Only a 30-minute walk from the centre, our first stop is El Castellet. These ruins of an ancient Islamic farmhouse are part of a protected archaeological area where remnants from both the Bronze Age and the Al-Andalus period have been discovered.
For an even greater insight into the local history, head to the remains of Alcalans Castle, dating back to the 11th century, which is also surrounded by a protected archaeological area. The walk takes just over an hour from the village centre, and the stunning views from the castle make the hike worthwhile.
Combine a spot of hiking with one last dive into the local culture by checking out El Pavo chimney - an old steam irrigation engine. Also, be sure to visit Cova Fumada while out and about exploring. Dip into Montserrat’s fascinating rural history and enjoy some much-needed time in nature.
