Known as the last master of 19th century realism, Mariano Benlliure was a Valencian sculptor of great international renown. One of the artist's best known pieces of work today is perhaps his bust of Goya that is used for the award of the same name.
Crevillent has a gallery dedicated to Mariano Benlliure that will introduce you to the artist’s life and work. The Museo Mariano Benlliure collection principally comprises plaster models and studies made before the final pieces sculpted from materials like bronze, marble and wood. Though fragile, the sculptures are of great value as they represent the early stages of the artist’s creative process.
The gallery also has unfinished pieces in wood, ceramic, bronze and even gold as well as drawings, paintings and other documents (notes, letters, photographs, news). Completing the collection are works by collaborators and students of Benlliure such as Mariano Rubio and Emilieta Torrente.
The gallery collection is diverse, giving you the opportunity to delve into the artist’s prolific work and gain an understanding of his impact on the Spanish world of art. There are a total of 128 pieces on display, in addition to temporary exhibitions that promise new insights on Benlliure. During your time in Crevillent, make sure you visit this excellent gallery among the town’s many other points of interest.
