Canelobre Caves in Busot (Alicante)
Published 07/12/2017
The small municipality of Busot, in the Alicante province, shelters among its mountains one of the best-kept treasures of the entire Comunitat Valenciana: Cuevas del Canelobre.
Let's start by locating them: in the Sierra de Cabeçó d'Or, whose impressive rock wall is perfect for climbing lovers where there are also excellent hiking routes. You can access them through a tunnel of about 40 meters long that, during the Civil War, was used as a shelter and repair shop for aircraft engines.
The surprise at the end of the passage is a big one: a space of about 80,000 square meters will open in front of you, full of stalactites and stalagmites that for thousands of years have been creating genuinely striking forms. In its interior, there is a constant temperature of about 17-18 degrees Celsius, so in the summer you will enjoy a welcome break from the heat, and during the winter you will avoid the outside cold.
Cuevas del Canelobre have different rooms, most of them open for speleology, but we stay the main hall and its huge vault which, with its 70 meters high, is one of the tallest in Spain. Thanks to its enormous size and incredible acoustics, it has been used several times as a concert hall, and it is difficult not to compare it with the vault of an actual cathedral.
An unforgettable place
This is not the only attraction of Cuevas del Canelobre; here you can also see a rock formation known as "Sagrada Familia" in which a column of about 25 meters high stands out. Although if there is a protagonist, who also names the cave, that is "el Canelobre", a stalagmite of more than 100,000 years old. In Valencian, the word "canelobre" means candelabra, and indeed the stalagmite looks like an immense stone candelabrum.
It should be noted that the main room has beautiful lighting, which illuminates every detail of the cave. Taking pictures is not allowed, but we guarantee that the beauty of what you will find inside will be enough that you will not have trouble engraving it in your retina.
After a guided tour of the cave, about 45 minutes long, we recommend you go to the Museo de Música Étnica, where you can see a large sample of musical instruments from every corner of the world. The collection belongs to Carlos Blanco Fadol, one of the greatest experts in ethnic music.
