Delve into the history of Catí, a municipality that used to be encircled by town walls.

Catí is a destination located in L'Alt Maestrat county in the province of Castellón. In the past, it was a walled town. The walls were built by Pedro el Ceremonioso who battled Pedro de Castilla in the well-known War of the Two Peters, in which the town was under threat from Castile.

Over time, specifically from the 15th century, the population started to move beyond the walls, building houses outside of them. Part of the wall was destroyed and the remains were used to construct new buildings, often using the town wall as the structural wall of the property.

If you come to visit the destination today, you will see parts of Catí town walls close to Vella Fountain, where there is a stretch made of large stones. You can also see ruins of the walls in the bases of some houses, which made use of the material. This is all that remains of the town walls that once served to protect and safeguard the population.
