The roots of the Riuraus Trail

The Riuraus Trail consists of a number of different trails to suit all tastes. It all started with the idea of preserving a part of the Region’s history; the boom in Muscatel raisin exports in the 19th century. At that time, riuraus were built, as well as other buildings, for raisin production, and the traditional processes used still endure to this day.

Riuraus are buildings that were uniquely designed to protect the grapes while drying from the extreme weather conditions. What’s more, they’re very aesthetically pleasing. Their characteristic rock walls and arches have become part of the natural landscape. 

For almost two centuries, the riuraus played a key part in the area’s economy, and now with this latest venture, these historic buildings are put back on the map as a symbol of the Region’s identity, allowing for exciting refurbishments and further changes to elevate these stunning structures

Thanks to the Riuraus Trail, you can now wander through the countryside and villages, learning about the hidden past of raisin production in the Region. Each town and village on the trail could be the starting point of your trail, where you will discover the beauty of these charming places as you walk or cycle through the countryside, passing dry stone sloping terraces and quaint old farmhouses.
