Las Cañas pilgrimage to Magdalena chapel
Romería de la Magdalena, the Magdalena Pilgrimage, commemorates the historic moment when Castelló de la Plana moved from the mountain to the coastal plain - a founding event celebrated every year with these vibrant festivities.
Taking place on the second day of the festival, you’ll need to rise early to catch the event. The bells and traditional music set the perfect tone for the big day, and at around seven o’clock in the morning, canes tied with ribbons are handed out in the main square, ready to be used along the symbolic walk.
The journey begins from Santa María la Mayor Church and decorated carts join the procession. It’s tradition to pack a bean tortilla sandwich to keep your energy up. Local treats like ximos and figues albardaes also serve as a welcome refuelling stop. The atmosphere promises to be electric, with the day capped off by delicious paella and spectacular fireworks.
Encesa de Gaiates
On the third day of La Magdalena Festival in Castelló de la Plana is an unforgettable spectacle: the Encesa de Gaiates. This impressive parade of illuminated sculptures commemorates the lantern-adorned staffs that once lit up the path for the city's early inhabitants as they travelled to the coast at dusk.
After a full day of fun street festivities, great for adults and kids, head to Avenida Rey Don Jaime to watch these iconic Magdalena monuments light up one by one before being moved to their designated spots. Expect a dazzling sea of colour and light.
Nit Màgica
Nit Màgica, Magical Night, is an incredible spectacle of light, street theatre, fireworks and music that fills the central streets of Castelló de la Plana with vibrant colours. Held on the fourth day of the festival, it has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the city.
Batalla de confeti
The sixth day of the festival is a favourite among children. This giant confetti parade features colourful floats and marching bands that proceed through the streets as confetti swirls in the air. There’s no better plan for a family day out.
