A weekend in Cullera, Valencia, promises to be a great adventure. This part of La Ribera Baixa is famous for its beaches and fairytale castle, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Read our itinerary to find out what else you can discover here.
Things to do in Cullera: day 1
To kick off your weekend in Cullera, we recommend taking a leisurely walk around the old town. Step inside the indoor market and purchase some fresh, local produce. Just next door to this foodie haven is an old air raid shelter from the Spanish Civil War open to the public.
After exploring the town centre, head up to Cullera Castle, passing through the colourful neighbourhood of El Pou. As you begin the ascent, you’ll reach one of the first structures of the fortress, the Santa Ana Tower and Old Chapel.
Cullera Castle is encircled by a vast, imposing wall that remains remarkably well-preserved. The 12th-century fortress features a Gothic chapel and houses Cullera’s History and Archaeology Municipal Museum.
To round off the day, make your way to Cullera’s harbour and check out the fish market. This historic landmark, buoyed by seafaring tradition, remains the go-to place for the freshest fish and seafood.
Things to do in Cullera and its surroundings: day 2
After exploring the centre of Cullera, let’s start the second day a little differently. Head out on a boat trip along the river Júcar to admire the area from the tranquil waters. Another option is a hike or cycle along one of the many country trails, where you’ll traverse paddy fields and get the chance to spot native aquatic birds.
Tras estas experiencias, en la que avistar aves acuáticas, seguimos en movimiento, ¡vamos a las playas al norte del río! La playa de San Antonio te sorprenderá por su amplia oferta de restauración, sus extensiones de arena y todos sus servicios.
Next, let’s venture to the beaches north of the river. The expansive sandy shores of San Antonio Beach have heaps of restaurants to choose from, along with a wealth of excellent facilities.
Keep on walking along the coast and you’ll pass beaches El Racó, Los Olivos and Cap Blanc until you reach the iconic lighthouse. This stretch of coastline is a great place to try your hand at windsurfing if you’re feeling adventurous.
Pack your camera so you can snap some great pics of the spectacular panoramic views from the lighthouse. This historic landmark sits within a plant micro-reserve overlooking a stunning rocky cove.
After a moment of reflection drinking in the views, continue heading north to El Dosel beach. The soft sandy dunes here form part of L’Albufera Natural Park - the perfect place for an afternoon siesta. When hunger sets in, find a table at one of the many restaurants in the area and tuck into a typical seafood dish or rice speciality.
To wrap up the trip, explore the southern stretch of the coastline with a visit to pretty Marenyet Beach and the 16th-century Marenyet Tower. As the sun begins to set, find a scenic spot by El Estany Lake and soak up the natural beauty, bathed in the warm glow of the fading light - there’s no better way to close your weekend away in Cullera.
