The traditions featured in Gandía’s Semana Santa date all the way back to Medieval times. Discover more.

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, in Gandía is an event of national tourist interest that features a series of age-old traditions.

The most emblematic of all these is Visitatio Sepulchri, a liturgical play established in the year 1550 by San Francisco de Borja, who would later be named patron saint of the town. The piece tells the story of the events of Holy Saturday, namely the entombment of Christ and the visit of the three Maries to his holy tomb.

The other days involve all sorts of celebrations such as parades organised by the Hermandades – brotherhoods – that were originally organisations of artisans and other professions. Some of the brotherhoods you can see in the streets are Hermandad de la Entrada de Jesús en Jerusalén, Hermandad de la Santa Cena Viviente, Hermandad de la Oración de Jesús en el Huerto, Hermandad de San Pedro Apóstol, Hermandad del Santísismo Cristo del Silencio, Hermandad del Cristo de la Flagelación and many more. Don’t miss the incredible festivities that bring Gandía to life every Holy Week.
