What to see in Salem
Filled with traditional façades and historical architecture, Salem’s centre oozes charm. Take a leisurely stroll and you'll be sure to spot a number of small ceramic altarpieces depicting religious scenes. We’d recommend spending some time at San Miguel Arcángel Parish Church, an 18th century place of worship that houses even older elements that were once part of the church that predates it.
Start your explorations of Salem’s surrounds with a visit to the Stations of the Cross, which affords spectacular views, or a walk the many trails around Salem, coming across dry-stone structures, fountains and old mills and ponds along the way. Make sure you put the wash house fed by El Poet fountain on your to-visit list: there’s a lovely atmosphere here.786
Next, we’d recommend making your way to El Molí Bridge, whose beautiful arch will get you reaching for your camera. Another of Salem’s heritage sites you won’t want to miss, if you enjoy hiking, are the old ice houses, where in the winter snow was packed in, turning it into ice, which was then sold.
Salem’s pretty scenery is bursting with caves and shelters that house rock art. You’ll want to explore Les Coves Gorge, also known as Las Cuevas Gorge, on a guided tour to see the art up-close and find out more about the history of the pieces. This is a wonderful activity.
And to round off your trip, take the route leading to La Barcella Castle in Lorcha from Salem. The trail has got plenty of points of interest and, of course, spectacular views. So what do you say? It’s time to start planning your getaway.
