Quartell, in the province of Valencia and the county of El Camp de Morvedre, is a small village sitting in the foothills of the Sierra de Espadán, where the coastal plain begins and some wetlands still remain. It is a place closely associated with the composer Joaquín Rodrigo, who spent his childhood summers in the streets of Quartell.

What to see in Quartell

Start your tour around Quartell by visiting the Parish Church of Santa Ana, built in the 17th century in the Baroque style. Inside, you will find fresco paintings and even a canvas attributed to the school of Juan de Juanes.

On your tour, you can also visit the old public washing place or llavaner, and the houses where the teachers once lived, although today they house various public services. Don’t forget to include the Molí Nou in your tour, a mill converted into an exhibition space. This is an 18th century building with an ethnographic collection that you’ll love, as it will show you how people have lived over time in this hidden corner of Valencia.

Another very interesting option is to explore the town by following the panels of the Joaquín Rodrigo de Quartell Route, which will enable you not only to get to know the village better, but also to discover details of the composer’s life and even to listen to some of his work.

In Quartell you can also make plans deep in nature, such as an excursion to the marshland known as El Quadro. This is located about six kilometres from the town, and is a great place for birdwatching and discovering other animals and species of plants.

Furthermore, Quartell is on the tourist and cultural route of the Camino del Cid with a beautiful path for you to delve into the beauty of the Segó valley. This is an itinerary signposted with information panels known as the ‘Ruta de l'Aigua’ (water route), along which you will come across ancient, traditional water infrastructures in the landscape, such as irrigation ditches and watermills.
