The Route of the Hermitages is a cycle of concerts that has been rooted in the town of Altea for more than a decade. The cycle travels all over the geography of Altea, visiting seven places where the aforementioned hermitages are located, each one dedicated to a Saint.
The concerts take place every year from the Saturday before Easter until the following weekend, with one concert per day. This activity attracts a large number of people who love good music. And it is a cultural attraction for the people of Altea and visitors who accompany us on these festive dates.
For the people of Altea the hermitages represent a heritage of incalculable value, surrounded by the most ancient traditions, preserved to this day. Since 2008, a brief explanation of each hermitage by the historian Juan V. Martí has been added to the programme and is presented below.
Since the re-foundation of the town of Altea in 1617, the population also began to colonise every corner of the municipality, creating over time nuclei of houses surrounded by orchards and terraces, popularly known as partidas.
These inhabited enclaves were transforming the landscape and with the effort of the neighbours, roads, irrigation channels, threshing floors,... and of course, hermitages were born.
