Embraced by agricultural land, Catral is a pretty destination that is full of things to see and do. Start planning your getaway and enjoy the warm welcome you’re sure to receive.

In Catral, you’ll fall in love with the huerta, or agricultural land, and a pretty village where you can enjoy a slower pace of life and rural hospitality. It’s also the perfect place to tuck into some delicious cuisine and explore El Hondo natural park. Shall we take a look around?

What to see in Catral

Catral will immerse you in the beautiful landscapes and unforgettable gastronomy of La Vega Baja in the province of Alicante. In the centre of the village we’d recommend wandering the most historic streets and stopping off to take a look at Los Santos Juanes church. Completed in the early 19th century, this place of worship sits on the site of a primitive Christian church which, in turn, sits on the site of an old Mosque.

Make sure you put La Purísima and Santa Águeda chapels on your to-visit list before heading outside the village to see the huerta, which is divided into terraces and crisscrossed with irrigation canals. The perfect place to take a leisurely stroll or bike ride.

El Hondo natural park has got plenty of surprises up its sleeves. The wetland is inhabited by countless bird species and has signposted trails which will lead you to beauty spot after beauty spot. If you’re into birding, don’t forget your binoculars and get ready to see some incredible species.

Catral also hosts a number of festivals. In February, you won’t want to miss Santa Águeda, which features a religious pilgrimage and plenty of sweet treats like turrón (nougat) and bolicas de Santa Águeda. The village also celebrates San Juan - when it comes alive with colour - Holy Week and Christmas, all of which are great times to come for a visit.

Last but by no means least, there is Catral’s gastronomy. Don’t head home until you’ve tried arroz con conejo (rice with rabbit), cocido con pelotas (stew with dumplings), pelotas “asás”, monas de calabaza (a sweet pastry made with pumpkin) and ensaladas de lisones (a type of salad). Start planning your trip to enjoy the beautiful sunlight of La Vega Baja today.
