As you wander around the historic centre of Cocentaina, you will be taken aback by places that are steeped in history. Before too long you’ll find yourself on Calle Mayor, where you can visit a very special museum: Museu Arqueològic i Etnològic del Comtat, El Comtat Archaeological and Ethnological Museum, which holds plenty of treasures among its walls.
The museum is located in a house dating back from the mid-13th century, although it was remodelled in the 15th and fully reformed in the 18th, becoming a home for the bourgeoisie. The façade is decorated with a number of interesting ornamental features.
So what will you find when you step foot in the museum? The ground floor houses a complete collection of prehistoric materials ranging from the Lower Paleolithic to the Bronze Age. You can see examples of how the traditional wine, olive oil and flour making systems worked and discover the cultivation of products like wheat, olives and grapes. You will also have the opportunity to take a careful look at the tools and objects used around the home, which give us a good insight into what life was like in Cocentaina many years ago.
If you enjoy museums and are spending some time in Cocentaina, we would also recommend visiting the Festival House Museum, which has clothing exhibitions, archives and many more objects of interest on display. Cocentaina is bursting with culture.
