Torre Almadraba, Almadraba Tower in Dénia, is an old defence and watchtower built between 1552 and 1553. It is one of the icons of this seaside destination in La Marina Alta. A structure that has been overlooking the sea for centuries, Almadraba Tower is one of many must-visits during your time in Dénia. Restoration work has left the tower in good condition and around the site you will see the remains of some hydraulic infrastructure, including a mill and a well. The information panel gives you a glimpse of what it would have been like in its heyday.
Almadraba Tower was named after the almadraba – a place where tuna used to be prepared once it was caught – it used to protect. As such, it was of great importance to the local economy. Its position was also strategic as it protected the River Girona, which provided the population with water. The tower sits just steps from the beach and next to the mouth of the river.
6m wide and 12m tall, the tower gives you the opportunity to cast your mind back to the times when it watched out for potential pirate attacks. Its surroundings, nonetheless, have changed over the centuries and Almadraba Tower now sits in a garden. Do you fancy coming to visit this great tower?
