Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Church is a Baroque jewel that graces the edge of El Castell de Guadalest and is brimming with history and art. Don’t miss it!

Declared a historic-artistic site, the village of El Castell de Guadalest is home to various interesting monuments including Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Parish Church. Built between 1740 and 1753 by José Sierra, it sits on the site of a 13th-century temple.

Over the centuries, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Parish Church has borne witness to numerous significant events, including fires and looting during the Spanish Civil War. These events led to a major remodeling in 1962, during which the church was shortened, and its original transept and dome were removed.

The highlight of the church is undoubtedly the ornate main altarpiece. Created by painter David Pastor Corbí and woodworker José María Moya Jiménez, the artwork comprises ten paintings that depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, including the Annunciation, birth of Jesus and the Assumption.

The church is situated right next to Casa Orduña and the Ethnological Museum, so you can delve even deeper into the local history and culture. Take a peek inside this living artwork and soak up the calming atmosphere. Be sure to check out the opening times before you get there!
