Dating back to the year 1734, Monóvar clocktower is a unique point of interest in the small town.
The clocktower sits on the highest part of the town where it rises high above the other buildings, dominating the skyline. What makes the clocktower so unique is that not only is it stand-alone – it is not connected to a church or other building – but it is also is of civil rather than religious use.
The tower was built to house the clock mechanism and bells. The structure has a square plan and comprises four blocks that are stacked one on top of the other. There is a sundial and mechanical clock and the final section of the tower is a pretty dome decorated with blue tiles that shimmer in the sunlight.
The tower was built in the 18th century during a period of prosperity that the governors wanted to mark. Once you’ve visited the great clocktower, there are plenty of other things for you to do in Monóvar. You could visit the castle, pop your head into San Juan Bautista church and take a look around Museo de Artes y Oficios where you will learn about the professions of yesteryear.
And before you leave, make sure you try vino fondillón, a fine wine that the area is known for. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip to this part of the province of Alicante today.
