The Les Fontetes - Assut de Mutxamel Interpretation Center is a center designed to welcome visitors where they can learn about the traditional irrigation system of the Huerta de Alicante. The irrigation system of the Huerta Alicantina, of clear Islamic descent, has its origin in the use of the waters of the Monnegre River and other small sporadic streams.


This hydraulic system is made up of the Assut de Mutxamel or "Les Fontetes" and the Assut de Sant Joan. The entire network of irrigation ditches starts from the Assut de Mutxamel, and is a diversion and retention dam built before the Tibi Reservoir, operating since the 16th century. XIII. Its function was to collect part of the waters of the Monnegre River and send them to the main irrigation ditch, called "mayo or del consell", from where different irrigation channels were derived to irrigate the entire countryside of Alicante.




The Mutxamel Weir and the Sant Joan Weir are declared Assets of Cultural Interest within the Monument category.




Guided tours every Sunday at 11am and 12pm to make this heritage known.




The center is located in the Sabateta recreational area, in Mutxamel, which will remain open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
