Head to Orihuela to discover one of the most important religious and cultural festivals in Spain during Easter. Kicking off on Palm Sunday on 24 March, the festivities begin with a procession that culminates in the Eucharist Mass at the roundabout. On 31 March, Easter Sunday, you can marvel at the parade and procession of one of the local brotherhoods, 'Hermandad de la Resurrección'. The 'Santísimo Cristo del Silencio' Procession is a good example of one of this festival’s unique traditions, setting it apart from other Holy Weeks. For this procession on Maundy Thursday the town is plunged into darkness, and only light from the lanterns carried by the brotherhoods illuminate the way. The bright colours of the embroidered tunics worn by the members of the brotherhoods, and the incredible religious thrones carried along the streets are worth seeing up close. Don’t miss Holy Week in Orihuela for an experience like no other.
