Come and explore Pego’s most iconic sights. This small place of worship is one for you to-visit list.

Ermita o Capilla de San José, San José Chapel in Pego, is a small, pretty place of worship that is steeped in history. San José Chapel is located in what used to be the Islamic arrabal, Atzeneta, a district which over the years became integrated with the rest of the town. It is thought to sit on the site of the former mosque, which must have existed until the 15th century, benefitting from a prized location close to the public fountain. The site has been a place of gathering and celebration for centuries.

In the present day, a large part of what can be seen of San José Chapel dates to work undertaken in the 20th century, which revealed a number of paintings that had been unseen for a long time. You’re sure to enjoy looking at them.

During your time in Pego, we’d recommend taking the Chapel Route, visiting not only San José Chapel, but also San Miguel Chapel, San Antonio Chapel and San Sebastián Chapel. It’s a wonderful way to explore the destination. You can also take a look around Pego Contemporary Art Museum, a place full of art and inspiration. So what are you waiting for? Put Pego and its sights on your to-visit list for your time in La Marina Alta in the province of Alicante.
