Situated in the province of Alicante, Villena is a town brimming with historic sights, perfect for a spot of cultural, wine and nature tourism. Join us on a tour of its best bits.
What to do in Villena
We recommend starting your exploration with a visit to the fairytale-like Atalaya o de los Pacheco Castle. Dating all the way back to the 12th century, this fortress is perched atop a hill right in the middle of town. This is a must-see when visiting Villena, and can be explored more deeply on a guided tour.
Next, walk along the castle walls and down into the beautiful historic centre, where you’ll find Santiago Apóstol Parish Church and the elegant Town Hall.
For a culture fix, step into Villena Museum, also known as MUVI, to admire its extensive collection of artefacts from ancient civilisations who once lived here. The legendary Villena Treasure is also on display, and comprises priceless gold, silver, iron and amber pieces.
If you haven’t quite had enough of visiting museums, then head to Villena’s Festero Museum, which sheds light on the town’s famous Moors and Christians Festival through a display of various historic objects.
Salvatierra Castle ruins, located on the edge of town, are also a must-see if you want to continue your trip back in time. There are monthly guided tours of Cabeza Redondo Bronze Age settlement too, so check out the dates and book a spot.
To wrap up the trip, we recommend heading out into Villena’s picturesque surroundings, which have been shaped by the limestone soil. It’s worth visiting natural sights such as Sierra de Salinas, and as you hike through the verdant landscapes, see if you can spot the old plaster kilns and unusual vegetation.
Finally, don’t leave Villena without sampling the fine local wines at a winery or restaurant. Start packing for you deep dive into everything Villena has to offer.
