Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María, Santa María Parish Church in Xaló, located in La Marina Alta in the province of Alicante, is a great place of worship with an impressive façade. Its position on Plaza Mayor means it bears witness to all the goings on in the municipality. The structure is built on the ruins of an old parish church, which in turn was located on an old mosque. The population of Xaló helped build the parish church, with construction work starting in the 18th century and concluding in the year 1831.
Santa María Parish Church in Xaló is built in the Neoclassical style and houses a statue known as Virgen Pobre. Legend has it that the statue was found in a poor condition by a local farmer and that she is the patron saint of Xaló. The statue stands on the high altar and dates back to somewhere between the 13th and 16th centuries.
Santa María Parish Church is shaped like a Latin cross and has three naves and a magnificent octagonal belltower. Come and discover the charms of this small, lively destination and fall in love with an urbanscape that is teeming with life and history.
