Discover a unique spot in Rojales that is steeped in history and home to a fascinating present-day community. Have your camera at the ready!
Cuevas del Rodeo, Rodeo Caves, is an incredible architectural site in Rojales that you have got to check out when visiting the county of La Vega Baja in Alicante. If you’re a keen photographer, then you will love this historic place, thanks to its many picture-perfect corners.
Built between the 18th and 20th century by expert miners who moved to Rojales, Rodeo Caves are dwellings carved out of the hillside. Thanks to the miners’ ingenuity, these curious cave houses have come to define the urban landscape of Rojales, setting it apart from other towns.
The white-washed exteriors of the caves create a striking contrast to the bright blue wooden doors and windows. After undergoing renovation, these cave houses now open their doors to visitors, encouraging them to step inside, explore the curious dwellings and admire the amazing views of Rojales and its surroundings from the hillside.
Today, you can also find craft workshops at Rodeo Caves, in addition to a small exhibition that recounts the fascinating history of the caves. On your rural getaway, learn how the caves were built and the everyday lives of the people that first inhabited them, occupying this idyllic part of Rojales.
We recommend spending a decent amount of time at Rodeo Caves, and don’t forget to peruse the beautiful handicrafts in the souk and the displays inside the caves. Not only are the caves a fascinating example of the local culture, they are also a hub for interesting events.
As well as visiting Rodeo Caves, you should also check out Rojales’ historic bridge, waterwheel and weir, then head out to explore the surrounding agricultural land. And don’t leave without visiting the Municipal Archaeological and Paleontological Museum and La Huerta Museum!
