What to see in Algimia de Almonacid
Framed by a dramatic mountain backdrop, the historic centre of Algimia de Almonacid is a fine example of a traditional Valencian village. Step inside San Juan Bautista Parish Church and admire the elaborate mural paintings, then stroll around the centre and soak up the tranquil atmosphere. See if you can spot the typical religious ceramic tiles that grace the walls of some of the old buildings.
There's so much to see in and around Algimia de Almonacid. Go on a walk or cycle up to Alfàndiga Tower, which is located just a few kilometres from the village centre. This Medieval fortification has formed part of the scenic landscape for centuries. To reach the tower you’ll have to cross an old stone bridge and go under the Alfàndiga aqueduct.
Make a detour to the well-preserved Nevera de las Hoyas, an 18th-century snow storehouse that sits atop a hill. It’s certainly worth taking a photo of this historic monument.
Another interesting site to visit while on your hike is the old trenches, offering a window into the area’s wartime history. Clamber down into El Estuco Cave to marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites, and explore the many natural springs and pools such as Calzada, Morte and Parra which ripple through the landscape.
To end your visit to Algimia de Almonacid with a bang, we suggest tackling the climb up to Espadán Peak. This route, which is leaning on the more challenging side, crosses oak forests and affords incredible views of the surroundings. If you love spending time outdoors, don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Come and explore this corner of Castellón!
