Altura is a town in the province of Castellón that has a long history behind it, which is reflected in its multiple examples of local heritage, such as San Miguel Arcángel Church and Primitiva Church. As you wander around the historic centre, you might just find yourself looking at the ruins of the Recinto amurallado – Altura Town Walls – which used to demarcate the walled section of the destination.
Altura Town Walls are listed a Site of Cultural Interest. The ruins of the walls are now scattered around the centre. Highlights include Clemente Gate, also known as Portalico, one of the former gates into the walled section, reached from the old trail from Segorbe. It was the main gate and saw people and goods travelling from Segorbe and Aragon pass through it.
It is unknown exactly how many towers Altura Town Walls had and whether or not it had its own moat. Nevertheless, and although they are confused with the country house, the walls are still present in Altura and can be seen by the topography of the land. Las Parras Gate is still standing to this day, located next to Portalico.
Come and visit Altura to see how both tradition and heritage are still very much alive in the streets. A getaway you will never forget.
