Discover a small temple with a big history, right by the sea.

La ermita fortificada de Albalat, the Fortified Hermitage of Albalat, in Cabanes, in Castellón, stands at the foot of the former castle of the same name, in the Ribera de Cabanes—an area shaped by its strategic importance.

Its origins date back to the late 13th century, although it was during the 14th and 15th centuries, when the threat of seaborne incursions grew, that it was transformed into a fortified church.

Featuring a single nave and pointed transverse arches, the Fortified Hermitage of Albalat was reinforced with elevated walls, a crenellated terrace, and an exterior apse converted into a watchtower. Nearby, other historic defensive structures can still be seen, such as the Torre de la Sal.

After a long period of abandonment that caused damage to part of the structure, the 1981 restoration restored its distinctive character, now visible in its rubble masonry walls, arrow slits, and striking silhouette facing the former castle. Discover what to see in Cabanes and explore the municipality’s coastal defensive past.
