Located in El Alto Mijares in the province of Castellón, Castillo de Villamalefa is a beautiful rural and nature tourism destination. This small municipality is perched on the side of a mountain, painting a spectacular picture. Come with us to discover some of the destination’s greatest sights and you’ll be inspired to pull on your walking boots to do some hiking. You ready to find out about its many wonders?
What to see in Castillo de Villamalefa
The old fortress that gives the municipality its name (castillo means ‘castle’ in Spanish) sits at the top of the mountain. Villamalefa Castle has almost completely fallen into ruin, though you can still see the remains of the old walls and towers. Even so, it is well worth coming to take a look at.
Wandering aimlessly around the streets lined with white-washed façades and clay roofs is a wonderful way to spend your time. Afterwards, we’d recommend visiting San Pedro Apóstol Parish Church, a Baroque place of worship that has a cross dating back to the 15th century.
Once you’ve explored the centre, we’d recommend taking one of the many walking trails starting at Castillo de Villamalefa. The best known will lead you to Chorro del Villar, a nature area that is also known as Chorrador. Here you will see a waterfall that, when water levels are high enough, forms a beautiful turquoise pool at the bottom. In summer it’s a great place to be. And since it’s about a two and a half hours walk from the centre of Castillo de Villamalefa, there’s no excuse not to go and take a look.
Another excursion will take you to Cedramán, a district surrounded by incredible scenery. Here you will see old arches, which are now part of the properties, and fountains providing cool water. Alternatively you could make your way to the River Villahermosa and take a walk that will mean getting your feet wet! So what are you waiting for? There are plenty of reasons to visit Castillo de Villamalefa so start planning your trip.
