This list of must-visit sights and monuments will make it easy to explore Espadilla, a village located in El Alto Mijares in the province of Castellón. Come and spend some time in this part of the Region of Valencia and you’ll find there are plenty of archaeological sites, natural landscapes and hiking trails waiting for you.
What to see in Espadilla
Espadilla is a village in the province of Castellón sitting on the banks of the River Mijares whose surrounds were once inhabited by ancient civilisations. The destination is steeped in history and is a joy to explore. We’re going to start our explorations in Espadilla’s Traditional Historic Centre, which dates back to Islamic times.
Reflecting the characteristic layout of a Muslim settlement, the streets reveal just how old the village is. On these streets, you’ll find ceramic panels depicting religious images. These are an integral part of the urban landscape; it would be great to get a picture or two of them.
San Juan Bautista Parish Church, which dates back to the 18th century, is our next stop. From here you can visit the most traditional streets, Plaza de la Fuente and beyond. You’re going to love everything that you see. Another sight for your list is San Roque Chapel, which you can get to along a short, picturesque walk. And you won’t want to miss the Stations of the Cross, whose stations depict different scenes from Holy Week.
Your next stop is Espadilla Castle, which sits atop Peña Saganta. You can still see the curtain walls, cistern and the ruins of a tower at the fortification site. The trail up to the castle is of moderate difficulty, but it is well worth the effort, both for the views you can enjoy as well as for the ruins of the fortress you can see.
Last but not least, make sure you stop by the recreational area of the botanic garden in Espadilla and explore the lovely walks in the areas around the village. Springs, old farm yards and houses, limestone kilns and much more are waiting to be explored. So what are you waiting for?
