Santuario de la Virgen de la Ermitana is a case in point. Holding a very special place in locals’ hearts, this church is well worth a visit. It was built around an old chapel attached to the castle, whose purpose was to add a touch of the religious to the fortress.

Its façade displays the coat of arms of King Phillip V who wanted leave his mark on the church. Santuario de la Virgen de la Ermitana is dedicated to the patron saint of Peñíscola, Mare de Déu de l’Ermitana.

Adoration of the town’s patron saint remains strong. Indeed, Peñíscola’s yearly patron saint festival has been declared an event of national tourist interest. Hundreds of people flock to the destination to visit the church, worship Mare de Déu de l’Ermitana and enjoy the festivities.
