What to do in Villanueva de Viver

Villanueva de Viver may be a small place, but it’s brimming with things to do and see. Let’s begin with a stroll around the historic centre, starting off with San Antonio Abad Parish Church, which was built between the 17th and 18th century. Stumble upon historic sites, such as the old public municipal wash house whose rustic charm is still very much intact.

Head out into the nature-rich surroundings that boast old stone farmhouses and crystal-clear pools. See if you can spot the rustic 17th-century San Martín and Santa Bárbara Chapel and the nearby viewpoint that affords picture-perfect vistas.

You can reach various picnic areas on foot, such as Fuente del Collao, where you’ll also come across the protected butterfly initiative ‘Oasis de Mariposas’. Wander towards former crop harvesting areas Fuente de San Roque or Fuente de la Hoya, both great spots to sit back and soak up some nature.

For some breathtaking views, head to Pradas, El Cerro and Horcones viewing points. Each lookout is dedicated to a local ancient craft, letting you dive deeper into the agricultural heritage by shedding light on old trades such as collecting resin, cattle farming and unique winemaking customs.

You’ll be impressed as to how well signposted the hiking trails are in Villanueva de Viver - you won’t need to get your phone out once! Take a path back in time and find yourself on one of the trails that used to be a hunting or logging pathway. Choose between the many routes such as Las Rozas, Las Cuevas de Manganeso, El Cerro, El Cerezal and La Resinera, and see if you can spot century-old oak trees as you go.

Make your way down El Barranco de la Col/Saltidera Aguachares route and you may spot some local wildlife. Most of the trails are gentle routes, so great to explore with the family. Come to Villanueva de Viver for an adventure like no other!
