Explore tunnels, learn about the workings of a mine and have a great time at Parc Miner del Maestrat. Put it on your to-visit list.
Straddling the municipalities of Culla and La Torre d’En Besora in L’Alt Maestrat, Parc Miner del Maestrat is a wonderful place to embark on an adventure into nature.
What to see at Parc Miner del Maestrat
Parc Miner del Maestrat is swept up in the incredible scenery of La Fontanella. Sitting 800m above sea level, the landscape affords spectacular views over the whole county. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to see the sea. Though it is worth coming for a visit for this reason alone, the area – populated with rosemary, juniper trees and Juniperus thurifera – has plenty more surprises up its sleeves.
The park comprises two old iron mines, Esperanza mine and Victoria mine, which are located 300m apart from each other. The mines started operations in the 1940s, in the midst of the post-war period, and were abandoned in the 1960s.
At Parc Miner del Maestrat you will have the opportunity to explore the tunnels and learn about the work that took place inside the mine. Take a guided tour with all the family and you’ll see tunnels, wells, stalactites and more. The park also runs mine themed children’s craft workshops.
Parc Miner del Maestrat promises a unique day out. Come along to explore an area of natural beauty where you will learn everything there is to know about the mining industry and a period of time that has a lot of stories to tell. This is an historic and cultural heritage site that the general public will enjoy exploring.
Plan a trip to Culla and La Torre d’En Besora and dedicate some time to visiting Parc Miner del Maestrat. You won’t regret it.
