What to do at Pou Clar in Ontinyent
If you’re spending some time in Ontinyent, you simply have to visit Pou Clar, a landscape sitting in the heart of Sierra de l’Ombria. The area is home to the source of the river Clariano, whose course of water has, over time, carved out beautiful scenery. A number of round pools have been formed, specifically Pou dels Esclaus, Pou Clar, Pou Gelat, Pou de la Reixa, Pou Fosc and Pou dels Cavalls.
To reach the pools, you can walk or cycle trails that snake through quintessentially Mediterranean plants like agave and carob trees. If you do need to drive, the beauty spot has a carpark, though it is closed in the high season.
Once you’ve arrived, you’ll find yourself enveloped in natural beauty. There’s a picnic area complete with drinking fountain (which operates from October to May) sitting in a pretty pine forest which you can reach from the lowest part of Pou Clar, Pou dels Cavalls. There are also historic caves, which are thought to date back to the 10th or 12th centuries and were probably used to store grain.
