Located in the province of Castellón, El Baix Maestrat is a destination with plenty of things to do. El Baix Maestrat’s destinations
El Baix Maestrat is home to iconic destinations like Peñíscola and Alcalà de Xivert/Alcossebre. It’s a place where you can savour exquisite Designation of Origin products like Benicarló artichokes. And it has UNESCO protected structures made using the dry stone technique – which dates all the way back to the Neolithic period – in Càlig.
Canet lo Roig has a beautiful centre, something there is no shortage of in El Baix Maestrat: Castell de Cabres is another great example. Visiting the sights in Cervera del Maestre is akin to taking a cultural journey back in time. And the medieval hamlet of La Barcella in Xert has a magical atmosphere, as do the streets of La Jana.
Next on our exploration of the destinations in El Baix Maestrat is La Pobla de Benifassà, the perfect destination for anyone that loves exploring areas of exceptional natural beauty. In Rossell, you can snap incredible pictures of its not one, not two but three centres, and you’re sure to find yourself falling head over heels in love with the scenery of the river Sénia. In La Salzadella, the ruins of the 13th century medieval wall are still standing and you can enjoy an incredible fair revolving around the cherry.
In San Jorge you will love exploring the old wash house while in Sant Mateu you will find yourself surrounded by medieval streets and monuments where you will have the opportunity to savour great wines and sweet treats made from almonds. San Rafael del Río is the perfect choice if you are in search of peace and quiet.
Pull on your walking shoes and set off to see the historic petroglyphs in Sierra de Irta. The walk starts in Santa Magdalena de Pulpis and is well worth the effort. You won’t want to miss the historic centre of Traiguera, populated with monuments from different periods, and in Vinaròs you will find yourself at the Mediterranean once again. El Baix Maestrat is full of surprises.
Things to do in El Baix Maestrat
There are countless experiences for you to enjoy in El Baix Maestrat. We certainly don’t have enough space to mention them all here so we will content ourselves by describing just a few. But we invite you to discover the rest for yourself.
Take a look around Peñíscola Castle and then listen to stories about the Knights Templar and powerful popes. Alcalà de Xivert/Alcossebre is home to another incredible fortress and coastline defined by the most spectacular little coves where Sierra de Irta meets the sea.
If you’re looking for gastronomic experiences in El Baix Maestrat, you simply have to try the delicious langoustines in Vinaròs and the tasty artichokes in Benicarló. Sant Mateu is another great foodie destination with its moreish almond treats, wines and olive oils.
La Pobla de Benifassà and the small hamlets comprising La Tinença de Benifassà are snaked with trails that will lead you to awe-inspiring landscapes that will immerse you in another world. Make sure you visit the millennial olive trees in Canet lo Roig and the rock art at Cova dels Rossegadors in La Pobla de Benifassà.
