Located in inland province of Castellón, El Alto Palancia is a wonderful county that is well worth exploring, particularly the beautiful natural landscapes. The municipalities are swept up in the scenery of Sierra Calderona and Sierra de Espadán natural parks and traversed by the river Palancia. It won’t take long for you to find yourself standing in areas of unexpected beauty and great environmental value.
We recommend you explore spectacular trails, wander down quintessential streets, visit historic monuments and – of course – dig into the local gastronomy. Fancy taking a look around?
What to see in El Alto Palancia
El Alto Palancia is home to a long list of municipalities, namely Algimia de Almonacid, Almedíjar, Altura, Azuébar, Barracas, Bejís, Benafer, Castellnovo, Caudiel, Chóvar, Gaibiel, Geldo, Higueras, Jérica, Matet, Navajas, Pavías, Pina de Montalgrao, Sacañet, Segorbe, Soneja, Sot de Ferrer, Teresa, Torás, El Toro, Vall de Almonacid and Viver. Take your time to explore them all.
Although describing the charms of each of these destinations is a near impossible task, we wanted to list some of the places that you won’t want to miss. In Altura, you simply have to stop off at Nuestra Señora la Virgen de la Cueva Santa Sanctuary and the beautiful La Vall de Christ Charterhouse. Meanwhile, in Segorbe, take a stroll around the historic centre, which has been listed a Site of Cultural Interest.
Jérica’s Mudejar bell tower is a highlight of El Alto Palancia, alongside the countless fountains, traditional washhouses and narrow streets that define the municipalities. Write a list of everything you want to see, and start ticking them off one by one.

Alternatively, make your way to Salto de la Novia in Navajas to take photos or explore Vuelta de la Hoz in Jérica.
Azuébar is home to a long, though not very technical, trail up to the castle, Peña Agujereada and Cinglos de Rincón, an incredible rock formation in the shape of a ledge that makes a natural viewing point. Almedíjar is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the cork trees as part of Ruta de los Oficios and, if you are keen to see unique landscape, head to the mountain lake at Dehesa de Soneja. And the list continues. El Alto Palancia’s municipalities are embraced by some beautiful scenery.
