Want to find out how to get to know Altea in just a day? This picturesque town in the Costa Blanca is a little gem defined by white-washed housefronts and blue-tiled domes. We’ve put together a guide for a day out in Altea, but we recommend spending at least two days to truly take in the beauty of its surroundings.
Altea: what to see in a day
With its charming historic centre, beautiful beaches, and natural beauty, Altea is an ideal destination for a multi-day visit. Our itinerary is designed to be flexible, so you can extend your plans and stay a bit longer to make the most of your time away.
A stroll around the historic centre
You can reach Altea by public transport, or if you get here by car, we recommend parking in the coastal district to avoid getting stuck along one of the town’s steep, narrow streets. Bring a pair of comfortable shoes as you’ll be on your feet exploring most of the day!
Wander the historic streets of Altea at your own pace and marvel at the cheerful whitewashed house, adorned with flowers that spill over the balconies. Peruse the craft stalls and local delicacies and perhaps take something home as a souvenir. Finding somewhere for a sitdown meal won’t be difficult as there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Places we recommend visiting when in Altea include El Maño, Salamanca street, Fondo street, Santa Bárbara street and the two pretty plazas, Carmelina Sánchez Cutillas and Francesc Marínez i Martínez. While on your day trip, make sure you also check out the Bellaguarda watchtower ruins and the two ancient gateways, Portal Vell and Portal Nou, which give an idea of Altea’s original layout around the ancient fortress.
The heart of Altea
Nuestra Señora del Consuelo Parish Church is certainly a must-visit. Situated in the centre of Altea, its striking blue-tiled dome sparkles in the sunlight. Dive down one of the cobbled streets from the church to soak up the laidback atmosphere that engulfs the historic centre.
Sun-soaked viewpoints
The numerous viewpoints here are not to be missed when spending a few days in Altea. Make your way to Cronistas de España Viewpoint, just a minute walk from the church, and let the sweeping views wash over you. Walk a little further and you’ll reach Blanco Viewpoint for yet more spectacular vistas. If you like taking photos, this 24-hour trip will leave you with plenty to take back as fond memories.
There is so much to see in Altea that after one day you might be tempted to stay a bit longer. There is still the seafront promenade and nearby coves to explore, which are worth checking out even out of season when the summer is over.
If you have more time to spare, make the most of being in this beautiful place and visit the famous L’Albir Lighthouse. Or, pull on your hiking boots and set off on an uphill walk to the stunning rocky viewpoint of Forat de Bèrnia which boasts vistas of the Alicante coastline.
