What to see in Morella in one day

Morella is an impressive destination located in Els Ports in the province of Castellón. Sitting atop a mountain and crowned with a history-steeped castle, it cuts a striking silhouette in the surrounding scenery. As you arrive, the first thing to capture your attention will be the magnificent town walls and San Miquel Gate, which makes an impressive entrance into the destination.

From here, we’re going to start travelling up towards the incredible castle. You will be amazed by just how well conserved it is, considering it is an ancient monument whose beginnings date all the way back to the Roman period. Over the centuries, the castle served as a strategic stronghold for a number of civilisations.

Once you’ve visited the castle, make your way to San Francisco Convent. This Gothic masterpiece houses some spectacular frescoes depicting the Dance of Death, which you should make a point of seeing.

The next sight to see in Morella in one day is Santa María Archpriest Church. Take your time admiring the two façades and then wander around inside, where you can see a beautiful staircase that leads to the choir stalls.

Next on our Morella in 1 day tour we’re going to take a stroll through the old Jewish quarter and then along Blasco de Alagón, a pretty street whose lively atmosphere will transport you back to the hustle and bustle of a medieval market.

By this point, you are sure to have worked up quite an appetite. One option is to get your hands on Morella’s traditional sweet pastries, flaons, which are filled with a sweet cheese and almond cream. Alternatively, you could sit down to have a hearty bowl of sopa morellana. Either way, you’ll be refuelled and ready to continue with your one-day tour.

For the afternoon, you’ve got a choice of two activities. One option is to spend a few hours looking around the exhibitions on display at Museums in Morella, particularly the fossil collection that is entitled Temps de Dinosaures. Yes, Morella has got dinosaurs!

The second option is to get some fresh air and take some photographs of Morella Aqueduct, which is also known as Séquia Reial. Built in the Gothic style in the 14th century, this structure is another incredible sight to see in this unique destination.
