La Marina Baixa: a Mediterranean treasure

La Marina is a great place if you want to feel the sea breeze, whether while exploring wild coves, vast beaches or riding the waves on a board or boat when doing water sports. The coastal towns here have a special charm too.

Get lost wandering around the historic centre of Altea, or venture along the Ruta al Faro de l’Albir in l’Alfàs del Pi, admiring the incredible coves, caves and lighthouse from high up. You can spend a whole day in Finestrat, strolling along the quiet streets shaded by Puig Campana mountain and ending with a dip at one of the many beaches.

After, head to Villajoyosa, a colourful spot with amazing beaches and an unmistakable smell of…chocolate. But we haven’t finished yet. We’ve left the best until last: a city that buzzes with energy all year round, keeping up with the Mediterranean rhythm and the true heart of La Marina Baixa.

We are talking, of course, about Benidorm, a real treat that combines a high-rise skyline with the peaks of Serra Gelada Natural Park overlooking the magnificent Poniente and Levante beaches. Discover Sierra de Bernia’s hidden gems in Callosa d'en Sarrià, where Fonts de l’Algar, home to pools and crystal clear waterfalls, is the perfect complement to a stroll around the historic centre dotted with tourist sites from past eras. Benimantell boasts thousand-year-old olive trees and walking routes that take you to ancient ice houses and castle ruins.

Beniardà and its many hiking options, Benifato, Confrides, Orxeta, the Favara fountain in La Nucia, and the incredible landscapes of Bolulla river create the perfect balance in La Marina Baixa between urban tourism and countryside that’ll take your breath away. The same is true in Orxeta and Relleu, where trying the local olive oils allows you to delve deeper into the culture adding to the overall experience.

In Polop you can visit Gabriel Miró House Museum, as well as check out climbing routes in Monte Ponoig, while the Sella has old mills, dams and freshwater pools to explore. Tàrbena invites you to discover its riuraus - traditional farmhouses - and the raisin tradition that spans centuries in Alicante. And lastly, why not visit El Castell de Guadalest, one of the prettiest villages in Spain.
