Mercado Central in València, a market celebrating local gastronomy

Gastronomy
Awaken your senses at València’s Mercado Central, a market where you can explore the flavours of the Mediterranean and marvel at Art Nouveau architecture.

As you wander along Calle María Cristina from the Ayuntamiento, it won’t take you long to realise that València is a beautiful city bursting with cultural sights. The distant past has been preserved, transporting it into the present and making it the focus of daily life.

When you reach Plaza del Mercado, you will see two of the city’s best kept secrets. To your right, La Lonja or Silk Exchange, which was built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. And to your left, València’s Mercado Central, or central market, a symbol of the Region of Valencia’s history that celebrates local cuisine, the local agricultural land, known as the huerta, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Mercado Central in València was built over a hundred years ago and took more than a decade to be completed. It is a warm place populated with friendly stall owners that breathes the Mediterranean.

Known as la catedral de los sentidos, which translates as the “cathedral of the senses”, València’s Mercado Central has some 300 stalls, making it the biggest food market in Europe. Beyond fresh produce, you can browse gourmet goods, international products and stalls specialising in wine, beer and tinned goods.

Sitting next to Los Santos Juanes church, Mercado Central has a number of domes made of iron, glass and ceramics that rise up to 30m in the air. These are topped with weather vanes, decorated with parrots and fish. The market is one of the greatest examples of Art Nouveau architecture in the Region of Valencia.
