Real Monasterio de Santa Maria de la Valldigna is one of the finest examples of the Region of Valencia’s historic heritage. If you’re visiting Simat de la Valldigna, make sure you find some time in your schedule to visit this great monastery. It will leave you speechless.
The religious site was founded in the late 13th century by the king of the Crown of Aragon, James II. It was originally Cistercian Gothic building, but over time, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical details were added. The reason for this is simple: the monastery was inhabited until the 19th century and throughout this time it was constantly being remodelled. Moreover, the monastery was hit by two earthquakes (in the 14th and 17th centuries), which required a large number of the rooms to be rebuilt. Today, you can still see Gothic, Cistercian and Baroque features at Real Monasterio de Santa Maria de la Valldigna.
The structure of Real Monasterio de Santa Maria de la Valldigna is complex and counts a number of buildings. Within these, there are three areas in particular which are worth pointing out. The first is the Charter House, which was designed by Pere Compte and features a beautiful cross vault, which was recently rebuilt. The decoration contains symbols of the evangelists, like the lion, bull, eagle and angel.
Santa Maria de la Valldigna church is another highlight. It is the best-conserved part of the monastery and features beautiful Baroque decoration. And last but by no means least is Claustro del Abad, a beautiful Gothic piece.
Monasterio de la Valldigna is still very much alive, with all sorts of activities running for a family audience. At the monastery, you can enjoy guided tours and living history tours, as well as gastronomic tasting sessions, concerts and talks. Come to Simat de la Valldigna to embark on a journey back in time. An unforgettable experience that showcases the value of the Region of Valencia’s heritage.
