Algar de Palancia

What to see in Algar de Palancia

Stroll along the narrow streets to take in the village’s historical charm. Pay a visit to the Old Defensive Tower, which now forms part of a present-day construction, blending seamlessly into the urban landscape. This Islamic tower is located in the centre of the village, making it a great starting point for your sightseeing tour around Algar de Palancia.

From the old tower, we suggest heading to Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes Parish Church, an 18th-century Baroque landmark that is defined by its striking textured stone façade. Step inside and marvel at the ornate embellishments that adorn the interior. Next, visit the aljibe, a traditional Islamic cistern, which has been lovingly restored and worth snapping a few photos of.

Just around the corner on the water’s edge, you’ll find the old public washhouses where Algar de Palancia’s delightful walkway Paseo del Amor begins. Follow the riverside path on a leisurely afternoon stroll and gaze at the scenic views.

The verdant scenery that engulfs Algar de Palancia is also home to some interesting historic sites, such as the dam or reservoir, which is only a twenty-minute walk from the village centre. 

Finally, before leaving Algar de Palancia, set aside some time to explore its many country trails, such as the Aljibes route, which comprises five of these typical water storage constructions which date back to the early 20th century.
