What to see in Càrcer

Let’s start our tour around Càrcer by visiting the historic centre, the neighbourhood of San Roque. Here, you’ll come across Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Parish Church, which dates back to the 18th century when the previous church was destroyed in a fire. Worth stepping into for a peek, this Baroque style building is simple yet elegant.

The church serves as the heart of Càrcer, where you’ll find a convivial atmosphere and plenty of things to explore nearby. Find a place to sit and take a moment to relax, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy watching the slow rhythm of daily life unfold before you.

See if you can spot the two early 20th-century ceramic wall tiles on Calle Santa Anna, which depict scenes from the life of the saint and form part of Càrcer’s urban landscape. And if you want an even more difficult challenge, go in search of the ceramic plaque commemorating the flood of 1864 with a line showing how high the river flooded to -  alarmingly around three metres from the ground.

Another pleasant activity to do in Càrcer is to weave your way through the orange groves on foot or cruise along on a bicycle. The nature trails are great for exploring the surrounding countryside, bathed in the golden Mediterranean light. Keep walking until you reach L’Arcà, the remains of an old aqueduct that creates the perfect setting for taking photos.

Càrcer is an enchanting little village that is perfect for unwinding at the weekend while on a mini-break in the country. This is the place for you if you like quiet walks in the countryside and time to connect with the land and a slower pace of life.
