In Chelva’s Plaza Mayor stands an impressive castle and walls, known as Palacio Vizcondal.

Palacio Vizcondal in Chelva was built in the late 14th century and served as the residence of the Viscount of Chelva. The earliest building on the site dates back to the 12th century where an Almohad alcazar once stood. The building has evolved ever since, acquiring the Medieval features you can see today.

The building is known by several names, including Palacio Vizcondal and Antigua Posada. It is located on Chelva’s Plaza Mayor, an unusual position as castles tend to sit atop hills or be positioned on areas of high land surrounding settlements. Palacio Vizcondal was listed a Site of Cultural Interest alongside the Medieval walls located in Chelva’s historic centre. The site is an incredible point of historic interest that is must-visit during your time in the destination.

In the 19th century, the palacio was converted into a posada or inn, giving it one of its alternative names. Nowadays, the building’s silhouette dominates the urbanscape, summoning you to come and explore.

During your time in Chelva, beyond gazing at Palacio Vizcondal you can also pop your head into Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles archpriest church, a fine example of Valencian Baroque architecture and a symbol of the village. The place of worship also sits on Plaza Mayor. We’d also recommend taking a stroll around El Azoque, the Jewish quarter, where you will be transported back to Medieval times.
